Number of applicants: maximum 8, minimum 6

Experience in ceramics required

Slabbuilding gives the opportunity to create shapes, which are impossible or very difficult to create by using a turning wheel or coil building by hand.

In this intense masterclass Lichtveld will teach you the techniques behind working with slabs of clay and building geometric shapes. In two days you will experience the complete process, which normally takes up to two months. You will learn how to build the work, how to determine and build the internal constructions, how to create air free slabs of clay, by hand or by using a press, how to create round shapes, how to determine the needed dryness of the slabs and how to prevent the slabs from warping.

In this masterclass the emphasis lays on the necessary knowledge and technical skills needed for slabbuilding. Therefore participants will not be working on one end piece, but receive theoretical classes and practical exercises to touch all aspects concerning the slabbuilding of geometric shapes.

Alexander Lichtveld
Ceramist Alexander Lichtveld creates architectonical sculptures: ‘Eminently clay is a material for doubters like me, who know what they want.’ Lichtvelds sculptures are abstract models, recognizable as buildings, but with a slight deviation. They don’t have windows or doors for instance. With simplicity and the natural material clay, Lichtveld tries to capture the essence of this discrepancy in a condensed shape.

Lichtveld studied ceramics at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy from 1973-1978. Throughout the years he created an extensive ouvre. His sculptures are included on various private, corporate or museum collections, such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Design Museum Den Bosch.

* Your application will be processed after payment. Sundaymorning@ekwc reserves the right to cancel the masterclass if there are not enough attendees. Already applied participants will be offered an alternative date or a full refund.
